Religion is a product of evolution, software suggests

What an interesting topic! This article was sent to me by a friend who I had been discussing the Creation Vs. Evolution topic with. I can see religion playing a part, but had never considered it to be a product of evolution. I'd love to hear what people think of this article.

"God may work in mysterious ways, but a simple computer program may explain how religion evolved
By distilling religious belief into a genetic predisposition to pass along unverifiable information, the program predicts that religion will flourish. However, religion only takes hold if non-believers help believers out – perhaps because they are impressed by their devotion."

Sorry, thought the link was just a title header for the post. Interesting article. Don't agree with much of it, but interesting none the less. To disagree with something, you must first explore it to come to that conclusion.

Yes, not just the general population, but no one knew how else to explain things. It was all very magical and beyond their control which was why they naturally assumed that a higher power must have had control.

It was also used as a means to control the masses and was for many years a great answer to self governance. It gave people the choice to behave in one way with possible consequences or follow generally accepted behavior with possible rewards. Remember, that religion did not begin with the Christian God but evolved into a monotheistic all powerful God.

I think religion has been perverted as man wishes to rule man. Take away a man's belief in a higher power and then Man can rule Man with little to no resistance. I for one would rather be ruled by a God of my choice than a Self appointed ego maniac. lol (Which is where I see us heading)

Religion, in many cultures, formed as a way to control the masses by using their fear of death. Many people are scared to the core to think of the inevitable end. None of us are iimmortal, unless I missed a memo somewhere... I would like to read this article further, in that I have always thought that religion has gone downhill with the further we get as far as being a civilized populace. Back in the days of medieval times and before, many were not educated in any more than the simplest of things that were required for daily work to survive. So, religion to them gave them answers, no matter how ridiculous. They simply weren't educated and cultured enough to know the difference.

Well I am certainly not Saint Thomas whoever that is but I am a believer of Jesus Christ the son God. I can surely explain why there is only ONE God but I cannot do that with out sharing scripture. I don't believe in a Trinty of three [persons]. The Bible in no way says this but does say God was manifest in flesh, hence Jesus. He was born of a virgin and told to call his name Jesus the Saviour of the world. I beleieve in the death burial and Resurrection. I beleive in ONE God manifest in three different operations not persons.
