I'll chime in and say that Gimp is the best of the free options. You can do just about anything in it, but it has it's quirks. I thought by shifting to photoshop, I would shed some of my qualms with free software, but it turns out that all software has their strong and weak points. That being said, it would not hurt everybody to have a copy of the latest version of Gimp. It's constantly growing and has had many merits that some of the big-boys have yet to claim when considering what you get for the price....
I agree it is a great starter program. One thing I wish it had was the background eraser that distinguishes the Bg from the main image you don't want to erase.

That would indeed be a handy tool.
I just found this forum on SA, and needed a question about the Gimp answered. Anyhow getting to my question: I'm working on a photo collage (well sort of but close enough we could call it that). I have my background all set up, and a photo on it so far, but I'm stuck at the resizing part. How do I go on to resizing it without resizing the entire photo?
JD I don't play with Gimp a lot but I will try to help you. Are you trying to resize your photos for the collage or the actual background?
Did you try using the pick tool to grab the corner and resize it? Scott is at work and he is the one who uses Gimp. That is how I do it in PSP, are you adding it as a new layer?
When you say shading, can you show me a screenshot example? I'm thinking gradient.
