definitely artsy...i like it :)
Here ya go James...
First of all I use Illustrator to do this since it's a vector program and I really don't like doing it in PS.
Sorry if it's not that great my first time writing down how I do something. I had better vectors of people but my flash drive caught a virus at school and i lost all my work from my first two semester and some stuff i did earlier :( but this image will do for now.
Most important thing to do is know how to use the pen tool ( if you have a pen tablet its way easier too) oh and have a lot of patience.
this is for a somewhat detailed vector and it's for how i did this one.
* oh yeah make sure when you are tracing each different part you turn off the ones you are not working on so you can look at the original.
1. open the image you want to do a vector of and lock the layer.
2. on a new layer start tracing the skin I usually fill it with a gradient with two skin color not too different. lock this layer.
3. now on a new layer I trace areas with dark shadows would be on the face. (since this image was so dark I played around with the shadows to what I actually like) I will place with the opacity on the shawdows to get them to the way I want them to look against the skin layer. Lock the layer
4. on a new layer on top of the shadows I start tracing the highlights and again play with the opacity to get the look i want. lock layer
5. now on a new layer I start doing the outline of the face ( I use inking brushes from lineart_brush_by_jimro) like the lines in the ear, nose, cheeks, neck, etc. I usually always keep this layer at the top of all the layer because I keep adding lines after each layer like clothes and hair.
6. keep doing each part of the image that you want to vectorize on a separate layer until the image starts looking the way you want.
7. Hair: I start with the base of the hair just trace the shape of it and add the darkest color to it. Then I add the strands again using jimro inking brushes. I put the strands in different layers depending on the highlights or shadows.
8. when Im done and decide i like how it looks I usually decide to make a bg for the image.
you can do anything with vectoring you can go very detailed depending on the time you want to spend or you can do it more simple make it look very cartoonish. Sometimes you can spend weeks, days or hrs making one depending on what you are trying to do.
Another cool thing you can do is if you sketch you can scan your sketch and then vectorize it. If you have any questions for me just ask ;D
You can also see some of my other vector and work in my photo albums
